Honoring Lt. John T. Pruitt Sr
Lt. John T. Pruitt, Sr. - A Legacy of Service
The Opelika Housing Authority proudly honors the life and legacy of Lt. John T. Pruitt, Sr., a dedicated public servant whose commitment to the City of Opelika and its residents spanned decades.
Lt. Pruitt began his career in public service with the Opelika Police Department, where he served with distinction and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. As one of the City's early African American law enforcement officers, he helped pave the way for future generations while earning the respect of both his colleagues and the community he protected.
His service did not end with his law enforcement career. Lt. Pruitt continued giving back through his leadership with the Opelika Housing Authority, serving approximately 30 years as a member of the Board of Commissioners. During this time, he played an important role in guiding the agency's mission to provide safe, affordable housing and strengthen the community.
In recognition of his lifelong dedication and impact, the Opelika City Council passed a formal resolution honoring Lt. Pruitt and approved the renaming of the 6th Street Bridge as the "Lt. John T. Pruitt, Sr. Memorial Bridge." This designation ensures that his name and contributions remain a visible and lasting part of the city he served so faithfully.
Lt. Pruitt's legacy is one of leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others. His influence continues to be felt throughout Opelika, and the Opelika Housing Authority is grateful for the years of wisdom and service he provided to our residents and our organization.
